This is based on a game my mum and I did a couple of years ago, basically awarding points for each cliche in a romantic comedy film. If you're re-reading feel free to add, as I feel like compiling it as we'll probably restart this over the summer.

Yeah. We're weird. But we drink wine before each one, so it's all cool.

POSITIVE POINTS for a good aspect of the film. NEGATIVE for bad/cliche/obvious aspects of the film.

NEGATIVES

Minus five points for a main character being a member of a popular ensemble TV show (e.g. Sarah Jessica Parker, Katherine Heigl etc)
Minus twelve if the leading man and woman come under this definition.
Minus twenty if the leading man is Matthew McConaughey. (mum and I do NOT see the appeal in this man, so this rule was introduced)
Minus five for a makeover scene. This includes any shopping for fabulous clothes that leading lady did not previously like.
Minus five if the break-up time in the film is between 10 and 20 minutes. (IT ALWAYS IS)
Minus five for the quirky best friend.
Minus ten if BOTH main characters have a quirky best friend.
Minus five for some kind of halt to a wedding.
Minus five for a really embarassing karaoke scene.
Minus ten for irritating slacker male characters.
Minus five for any gags with animals.

POSITIVES

Plus five if quirky best friend is played by someone really awesome. (this rule was introduced when Zooey Deschanel was in Failure to Launch which won the title of worst romcom last time we did this. She's too awesome to get negative points.)
Plus five for an actually really funny karaoke-type scene. (see: 27 Dresses. Only bit I liked in that film)
Plus five if it uses cool music. (see: Intolerable Cruelty)
Plus five for George Clooney. (he's kinda awesome)
Plus five if it has someone from Frasier in. (see: that horrible film that had Lillith in)
Plus ten for Ben Stiller. (see: Meet the Parents
Plus ten for Robert de Niro (see previous reason)

.

& I'll finish this after I collaborate with mum and we start the game up again. Any suggestions, gimme.

I'm so glad it's not just me. My housemate made me watch some rubbish film called 'Fool's Gold' cos it has him in and she loves him. Blergh.

also the equally horrible one with David Hyde Pierce.

Oh, and minus ten if it's a needless and pointless sequel.

Wow, were you by any chance watching Failure to Launch? Because those negatives are ALL in that.

Most of the rules were made before that film, but even Zooey Deschanel meant it wasn't saved, and it was the worst one two summers ago when we first did this ;)

Matthew McConaughey is number three on my list of things i don't hold with. Or two, I don't remember. He's up there, anyway. His teeth freak me out.

Also I read karaoke as 'karate' and now I think I really want to see a romcom with an embarrassing karate scene.
